The heart of any Saddle is the Tree.  The Tree, which is composed of five parts, was originally cut from Oak and covered with Rawhide for strength.  However the increased weight of the Oak resulted in lighter woods being used.  Rawhide is actual Raw-hide with the hair and flesh scraped off and is incredibly strong.
